TOM YOST
Artist's Statement
Color is the theme of this show: Color which is captured in these works in each picture’s unique depiction of specific places, in specific seasons at specific hours of the day. From the icy blue waters of Trillium Lake in the morning, to the emerald green fields of Spring Valley in the afternoon, to the indigo faces of the breaking waves off Neskowin Beach at dusk. This exhibition features twenty new studio paintings created between the fall of 2024 and the summer of 2026.
These works encompass scenes that I witnessed, photographed, and then translated with
oil paint into my own interpretations of each landscape. A photographic image of each scene is essential to begin my process of achieving realism in a painting. This initial document serves me with the all-important guidelines for the composition as I begin the layout of each painting. The realistic details are useful and available in describing each landscape. I, however, am not beholden to the photo. Details in the photo can be subtracted or changed, and the values and colors come from my own vision and memory. Then as the painting progresses it seems to find its own way and come to fully realized life. Capturing a moment in real time and preserving that image in oil paint is a privilege and an obligation for me.
Also included in this exhibition are many of my plein aire studies. These paintings are started and completed on location in just a few hours as opposed to the studio works which can require from 2 to 6 months (and up to 50 hours) to complete. The studies are an exercise for my mind and eye which serves me well when I paint in the studio.
This is my third solo exhibition at The Good Gallery and I want to thank Tim and Sarah Good for their commitment and support of my work.
